Uzone.id — When it comes to trends, TikTok has become the go-to platform for sharing and even creating them. One notable example is the Douyin Makeup trend, which hails from China.

While scrolling through TikTok, you might have come across a makeup style that seems fresh, bold, and uniquely different—yes, that’s Douyin makeup!

Originating from the Chinese app Douyin (the Chinese version of TikTok), this makeup trend has made a huge splash among celebrities and influencers, thanks to its soft, dreamy aesthetic.

Soft, Yet Bold

Douyin makeup is all about blending a soft, youthful glow with carefully crafted details that make features stand out.

“Douyin makeup emphasizes looking like the best version of yourself, but with a playful, almost fantasy-like twist,” said makeup artist Lucy Yang, who specializes in East Asian beauty.

The standout characters of Douyin are dewy skin, flushed cheeks, and bright, sparkling eyes. But what makes this style different from other beauty trends is the delicate balance between looking naturally radiant and having defined, standout elements like bold eyeliner or glittering eyeshadow.

Why Is Douyin Makeup So Popular on TikTok?

On TikTok, the hashtag has over 1.3 million views and you’ve probably seen at least one or two videos land on your FYP.

According to a study by Market Research Future, Gen Z is driving demand for skincare and makeup products that emphasize glow and natural radiance. This explains why makeup styles like Douyin, which prioritize a fresh-faced glow with pops of color, are becoming a thing these days.

“Douyin makeup allows for self-expression while maintaining that soft, delicate touch that people are drawn to. It’s no surprise that this trend has made such an impact on TikTok,” said beauty expert Sophia Wu.

Another reason why Douyin makeup is so popular is its versatility. It’s glam but suitable for everyday wear, it is more dramatic for special occasions as well.

“Douyin makeup has a way of embellishing your natural features while still letting them shine through, and I think that’s what drew me in,” said content creator Lewis Chia.

This style also has that “aesthetic” vibes that are popular among Gen Z. It offers a dreamy, doll-like look that matches the carefully curated vibe many users aim for on their TikTok profiles.

The Influence of Filters and Editing

Just like another trend in social media, one unique factor behind Douyin makeup’s popularity is its connection to filters. Douyin, like TikTok, is known for its wide range of beauty filters that can be used everywhere and anytime.

Many beauty influencers and creators use these filters to demonstrate the look, creating an online beauty standard that bridges the gap between reality and fantasy.

This filter is also used as a try-on to see the result first before actually putting Douyin makeup on their real face. The filter often mimics the results of these filters, with a focus on smooth, poreless skin and wide, bright eyes.

“I started to see Douyin makeup more often on my social media but I rarely saw this style on people with my facial features. So I was curious to see how it would look on me,” said Creator Kamille Gregory in Teen Vogue.

How to Get the Look

There are subtle but key differences that separate the two looks. For example, Korean beauty only uses light, barely there minimal color on the eyes whereas Douyin uses a lot of glitter on the lids. Here’s how to get Douyin look:

Dewy Base: Start with a luminous foundation or BB cream to create a radiant, almost glass-like complexion. Add a bit of liquid highlighter to the high points of your face for extra glow.

Blush Overload: In true Douyin fashion, blush is applied generously on the apples of the cheeks and even across the nose for that flushed, “just came in from the cold” look.

Big, Bright Eyes: Eyes are the star of Douyin makeup. Use shimmery eyeshadows in soft pinks, peaches, or browns, and add a glittery touch to the inner corners of the eyes. Winged eyeliner and long, fluttery lashes give that doll-like effect.

Gradient Lips: A gradient lip effect is key, with the color concentrated in the center of the lips and blended out towards the edges for a soft, blurred look.

With its growing popularity, it seems Douyin makeup isn’t just a fleeting trend. As more influencers and makeup artists on TikTok experiment with this aesthetic, we’re likely to see it evolve further. Whether it’s incorporating new color palettes or merging them with other global trends, Douyin makeup is set to remain a staple in the beauty world for a while.

As this trend continues to rise, it’s clear that Douyin makeup is redefining beauty standards on a global scale—one dewy look at a time. Whether you’re a fan of the trend or just discovering it, there’s no denying the impact Douyin makeup has had on the world of social media beauty.
